Call for submissions: The Modern Prometheus - new essays on science and culture
Marking 200 years of Mary Shelley's masterpiece
Little Atoms is committed to good ideas and great writing. Working with the Wellcome Trust in 2017, we explored the convergence of science and culture in a four-part podcast series, tracing modern science’s influence on literature and art, from the age of Enlightenment to the horrors of postwar Europe.
Continuing that work in 2018, Little Atoms is seeking to commission six essays on the theme of The Modern Prometheus (the original subtitle of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the bicentennial of which we celebrate this year). We are looking for essays that will further probe the interaction between arts and science, whether that be new ideas, futuregazing, or unusual and overlooked stories.
Each selected essay will be published, with bespoke illustration, in Little Atoms’ online essay format.
Essays should be 1,500-2,500 words long, and submitted in Word, with links and references where appropriate. Each published author will receive £250, and the chance to appear on a platform that has featured some of the finest essayists and science communicators of recent years.
Submissions will be accepted from anywhere in the world. We are equally open to new and established writers – previous experience and publication will not be taken into account.
Submissions must not have been published in any other outlet or platform in any form.
