He was reviews editor and editor of Tribune (1986-93) and deputy editor of the New Statesman (1993-96), and has freelanced and worked as a journalism lecturer (currently at the University of Essex) since the late 1990s. His books include Safety First: The Making of New Labour (with Nyta Mann, 1997), Orwell in Tribune: As I Please and Other Writings (2006) and Moscow Gold? The Soviet Union and the British Left (with Kevin Davey, 2014). He is now working on a book on British enthusiasts for Chinese communism.
